MODULE 1
Homework Assignments
The importance of your homework assignments cannot be overstated. They enhance your learning and prepare you for the next Module. Even more important is that you return and participate in the next Module on your way to certification. You can both read and submit your assignments below before your next Module.
Once you have completed and documented your assignments, you will submit your homework by entering it into the fields, AND/OR by uploading a digital copy of your handwritten homework log using the form below. Remember to click the blue button at the bottom of the form, or your work will not be received.

1. PERSONAL PRACTICE - Develop and cultivate your own personal daily Somatic Exercise/Movement practice. Definitely include the “Cat” routine exercises/movements plus any additional Somatic Exercises/Movements you find helpful. Benefits from daily practice accrue over time and contribute to your clinical and teaching experience. You'll also be able to speak more authoritatively about the helpfulness of Somatic Exercises/Movements due to your first-person experience with them.
2. READINGS - Read and/or re-read Thomas Hanna’s books Somatics and The Body of Life and his article Clinical Somatic Education: A New Discipline in the Field of Health Care (see your Module 1 manual).
3. STUDY - Continue to study anatomy and kinesiology — especially the muscles and joints most relevant to Clinical Lesson/Protocol 2 (Trauma Reflex). In Training Module 2, you will learn Clinical Lesson/ Protocol 3 (Red Light Reflex) and will review Clinical Lesson/Protocol 2.
4. BETWEEN MODULES - students may contact a teaching team member about assignments, issues with clients, and any concerns about staying on track towards completion of the program by the end of your final Module. Remember that in order to qualify for certification, you must satisfactorily complete and submit all of the Training’s assignments as well as demonstrate competency in Hanna Somatic Education®.
5. GROUP CLASSES - Conduct at least 1 Somatic Exercise/Movement class series teaching Lessons 1-5 in Thomas Hanna's book “Somatics” (pages 101-128) with 2 or more participants and document each lesson in the series on the “Documented Homework” page located in yourmanual. We use the honor system and depend on your integrity. *You can choose to upload a photo/image file of your hand-written homework record page or type/enter your information into the form fields below.
6. INDIVIDUAL SESSIONS - Do a minimum of 20 individual purely Hanna Somatics sessions:
20 sessions of Clinical Lesson/Protocol 2 (Trauma Reflex)
and document them as you go on the “Documented Homework” page. We use the honor system and depend on your integrity. Please begin as soon as possible after you get home. Do as many sessions as possible beyond the minimum of 20. The sooner you begin and the more people you touch in a Hanna Somatic way, the richer your learning will be. *You can choose to upload a photo/image file of your hand-written homework record page or type/enter your information into the form fields below.
7. ADDITIONAL ENGAGEMENT - How else have you engaged others in HSE experiences apart from the above homework?

Use a narrative style and incorporate information from your intake and session notes. Be sure to identify which of the three somatic reflexes is/are most prevalent. Define any nonstandard abbreviations or idiosyncratic terms. Include at least:

Remember that in order to qualify for certification, you must satisfactorily complete and submit all of the Training’s assignments as well as demonstrate competency in Hanna Somatic Education®.
5. Question #2 - What structures and functions of the brain and nervous system (central and peripheral) are involved in Hanna Somatic Education? How do you, or might you, use this information in the practice of Hanna Somatic Education? Explain in detail. This question will be the majority of your paper.
Paper parameters - Your HSE final paper shall be a maximum of ten (10 pages or 2500 words max) that are typed in a readable 12-point font, paginated, double-spaced, and in one of the acceptable formats listed here (.docx, .doc, .pdf, .txt)
* This HSE Training requirement is completed by answering the two questions, following the paper parameters above, and uploading your paper file in the form below. Once we recieve your uploaded paper we will review it and contact you as soon as it has been accepted and your requirement is fulfilled.

Otherwise, please continue to teach Lessons 1-8. Be prepared to lead your classmates through any one of these 8 Lessons or a Hanna Somatic Exercise of your design in class during Training Module 6.
5. ADDITIONAL SESSIONS - Complete additional individual Hanna Somatic Education sessions even though we are not asking you to document them. We encourage you to incorporate extremity work while maintaining the integrity of Clinical Lesson/Protocol 1, 2, and 3.
